Otley's Riverside Visitor Centre

a huge opportunity for Otley

This exciting proposal would benefit the community of Otley and also be a new attraction to visitors, to boost the local economy, as well as delivering much needed carparking with Wharfemeadows Park currently having no car park and with neighbouring streets getting very full in summer months.

The proposal would also ensure permanent access for Otley Show and Otley Carnival, both of which rely on hardstanding surface/car park for vehicles and access. The site is also near the start (or finish!) of the Six Dales Trail and the café would be very welcome for walkers!

History & Future

The Otley Bridge End site, historically the site of the Bridge End Auction Mart, was purchased and has since been extensively cleared up by the Houldsworth family who want to deliver this project for the benefit of the community. The Houldsworths bought it to secure the future of the site, after failed attempts by a developer to build houses, something strongly opposed by the local community and councillors.

The proposed visitor centre would be constructed to work on and with flood defences as well as delivering a key ambition from Otley Town Council’s Neighbourhood Plan.

The proposal has support from numerous local organisations including Otley Show and Otley Carnival. You can see our full list of supporters here.

Unlike other local campaigns/plans, this proposal doesn’t need any Council/taxpayers’ money or crowdfunding – it just needs permission from Leeds City Council and approval from the Environment Agency.

Ask your local councillors and your MP to support this exciting proposal – to deliver a riverside visitor centre and café, public toilets and riverside car park to the benefit of Otley.

Otley needs more parking!

Carparking is a big issue in Otley, as everyone knows and the current Leeds City Council car parks don’t provide enough parking. The new car park would benefit Otley by providing much needed parking both for the riverside and for the town centre for those accessing it from the north (and therefore reducing traffic travelling over the bridge, which is a bad bottleneck)

Currently visitors to the park have to park along the roads adjacent to the park, causing congestion and safety issues on both sides of the river. The new Riverside Visitor Centre cark would help reduce this.

The plans include both a car park and a coach park, which would double as the vehicle parking for the Show and Carnival. This could also provide relief parking for the school bus (Prince Henry’s Grammar School) service. At the moment, these buses have no choice but to park all over the town, so having access to the new car park would reduce congestion and increase safety.
